AVALON W16 TOUR 2023 RETURNS TO VANUATU: PROMOTING WOMEN’S SPORTS

After a three-year COVID-enforced hiatus, the Australia’s Avalon W16 tour to Vanuatu is finally making its comeback in 2023.

Since its inception in 2012, the Avalon W16 tour has been dedicated to promoting women’s sports in the region. The tour provides an opportunity for the Avalon team to compete against local Vanuatu women’s teams, while also allowing the Avalon community to make charitable donations to projects in Vanuatu.

This year, the Avalon team comprises 21 talented girls from their two W16 teams, who will embark on a nine-day trip to Vanuatu. During their visit, they will participate in three matches, engage in community visits, contribute to cyclone recovery efforts, and hold a meeting at the Australian High Commission in Port Vila.

The Avalon girls arrived in Port Vila yesterday and are set to play their first match against the Vanuatu U16 team at 3 pm today at VFF Freshwater Stadium.

The team has secured two matches against the Vanuatu U16 Women’s national team in the capital on July 6th and July 8th. These matches present an incredible opportunity for the Avalon girls to gain valuable experience, while the Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) aims to fine-tune their preparations for the upcoming Oceania U16 Championship in September.

In addition to their sporting endeavors, the Avalon group will also lend a helping hand in cyclone recovery projects. The island of Vanuatu has recently faced the devastating impacts of two severe weather events that occurred in March. By participating in recovery initiatives, the Avalon girls aim to make a positive impact on the local community.

Prior to their journey to Vanuatu, the girls proudly represented their club in the Anzac Day March and completed their Miniroos coaching certificate. This certification equips them with the skills to conduct coaching clinics for children aged U6 to U9 in Vanuatu, further showcasing their commitment to supporting youth development in the sport.

The Avalon W16 tour to Vanuatu promises not only thrilling matches but also opportunities for cultural exchange, community engagement, and humanitarian efforts. This initiative continues to foster the spirit of sportsmanship and goodwill between the Avalon community of Australia and the people of Vanuatu.
