Garae record first match in the FIFA World Cup

Jeremy Garae and his referee colleagues from Oceania – Nicholas Waldron and Isaac Trevis from New Zealand, have recorded their first feat as match officials for Tajikistan vs Cameroon in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil this week.

For Garae it is his World Cup debut after he got his first FIFA badge in 2015, to officiating international games in the Oceania Football Confederation Competitions.

Vanuatu Football Federation Referee Instructor Carlo Nasse speaking to VFF Media this week said he is proud of Garae and it is a big achievement for Vanuatu and the referee development programs carried out by VFF and the leagues supporting it.

“As a mentor for Jeremy, I am really proud of his achievement to reach the FIFA U-17 World Cup and he is an example for all referees, young boys and girls pursuing a career in referee and our football stakeholders to get involve in the VFF referee program”.

In August 2019, FIFA Referees Committee has appointed Jeremy Garae as part of the 20 trios of match officials, five Support Referees and 17 Video Assistant Referees (VARs), representing all six confederations, in the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil.

Nasse explained that it is a lengthy process for a referee to reach the World Cup stage and it took Garae over 5 years and solely discipline and commitment are key factors for a referee to advance forward.

“A referee must first perform in the local league to get a VFF badge, then assessors recommends them to get OFC badges and lastly the FIFA badge guarantees them to perform in OFC and FIFA tournaments”.

Nasse explained trios of match officials are selected from a pool of FIFA badges in each confederation world wide and usually in the case of Oceania as he understands, the centre referee gets to select his or her trio for a tournament.

The Referee for Tajikistan and Cameroon is Nick Waldron and Isaac Trevis and Jeremy Garae are Assistant referee 1 and 2, and Fourth official are Ivo Mendez from Bolivia and Video Assistant referee is Steinhaus from Germany.
