The Vanuatu Gideons Futsal Team showed resilience as they fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against the host nation, Fiji, in the opening match of the Inaugural Melanesian Futsal Cup Tournament at the Suva Vodafone Arena today.
Their impressive performance was recognized as Rhydley Napau received the prestigious Player of the Match award.
At halftime, Fiji held a 2-1 lead, but Vanuatu displayed determination and leveled the score to 2-all by the end of full time.
“We had numerous scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize on them,” commented Coach Ben Hungai. “However, I am proud of the boys’ performance, and I believe they are ready for tomorrow’s match against the Solomon Islands Guruguru at 4pm,” he added with satisfaction.
Rhydley Napau, who was named Player of the Match, joined the team thanks to the support of the Vanuatu Football Federation (VFF) as they brought him from Tanna to be part of the squad.
“I am truly delighted with the VFF’s support, and I can confidently say that bringing Rhydley Napau from Tanna to join our team has proven to be a worthwhile decision,” expressed the coach with gratitude.
